Speaker - Aoife GrantDr Aoife Grant PhD, BSc(Hons)

Aoife Grant graduated with an Honours Degree in Chemistry from University College Cork in 2007. With a keen interest in the environment she decided to continue her studies, starting a research PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry at Bristol University in September 2007. This was a great opportunity to learn about the dynamic atmosphere around us, to see how very low concentration atmospheric gases are measured and what information these measurements provide us with. Aoife gained her doctorate in September 2010. After a short break from research over the winter working as a chalet host in a ski resort, Aoife returned to Bristol and was offered a job as a Post-Doctoral researcher, responsible for setting up the first UK network of stations for measurement of greenhouse gases. Aoife began working on this exciting project in April 2011. Using a model which tracks where air has travelled from, measurements of these key greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane amongst others, will enable us to quantify the UK emissions of these species by region. Results from this government commissioned project provide essential information on the emissions of harmful greenhouse gases within the UK which impacts directly on policy decisions.

Speaker - Rose BaileyRose Bailey - University of the West of England (UWE)

PhD Student

Rose is currently finishing a PhD at UWE, investigating the low carbon futures for the Bristol region. Her research asked 140 local influential people “what would you like Bristol to look like in 2050 if it was a low carbon city, and how do we make it happen?” to exploring how we might achieve long term targets. Her research has been supported by Bristol City Council and the Centre for Sustainable Energy, Bristol. Before this, Rose worked for Oxfordshire County Council on carbon management and sustainability. Rose has a BA (Hons) in Human Sciences from St Hilda’s College Oxford, and an MSc in Environment and International Development at the University of East Anglia, where she conducted research into media representation and public understanding of climate change. Rose has also worked in natural resource management in the USA and Sri Lanka.
