SMART is a R&D centre established in 2004 and located at Loughborough University. We aim to go beyond current incremental process improvements, towards the next generation of sustainability initiatives which are capable of dealing with challenges in resource scarcity, climate change, and global social and ethical inequities.

Urban Grain CIC

Edible Eastside is a green and ethical food programme. It teaches everything about food – from growing to cooking to eating it, and the theory in-between. The garden and school is situated in the city centre of Birmingham. The company sells produce, runs classes, apprenticeships and runs food events.

Environment Agency

The Environment Agency was established in 1996 to protect and improve the environment. They work to create better places for people and wildlife, and support sustainable development in England. Responsibilities include managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea; regulating major industry and waste; treatment of contaminated land; water quality and resources and; conservation and ecology.


The NEC welcomes around two million visitors and over 500 events every year. As the UK’s number one events venue, it proudly embraces progressive advances towards sustainability for the industry. The NEC’s own waste management facility opened in 2009 and Zero waste to landfill was achieved two years ahead of schedule. To-date 10,000 tonnes of waste was diverted from landfill.
